Divorce

There are many things to consider during a divorce, including how to divide marital property and how to best care for your children. I will guide you through the divorce process and help you decide on the right solutions for your family. As a family law attorney, I represent both men and women in all aspects of divorce, paternity actions and intimate partner dissolutions.

  • Property division - Washington is a community property state. The court can divide property in the manner that it believes to be fair and reasonable. I will advocate for fair and reasonable division of marital property from your perspective.

  • Child Support - Washington State guidelines require both parents to provide for children. I will help you understand the process and give you a realistic assessment of what you should expect.

  • Child Custody - A "residential plan" outlines how much time each parent will spend with the child. In child custody cases, I believe what is good for your child is good for you.  My philosophy is to determine and serve - with your permission and concurrent determination - the child's best interest.

  • Alimony - Also known as spousal maintenance, alimony is granted by the court during the time between separation and divorce when one person needs financial support and the other person has the ability to pay it. After the divorce is finalized, the court can choose to grant alimony based on the age of both people, the length of the marriage and the relative incomes of each party.

You might also consider mediation or collaborative divorce as options.

Prenuptial Agreements

If you are entering a marriage with significant assets, or if you already have children, a prenuptial agreement is an important document to consider. It protects both parties entering into a new marriage and keeps separate property separate.

Intimate Partnership Agreements

Sometimes called "Living Together" agreements, these let you and your partner determine how property will be divided if you split up. Regardless of whether you are in a heterosexual or same-sex relationship, if you have been living together as if you are married, you have rights regarding mutual property. I can help you understand your rights and make sure that they are protected.

Contact me today to discuss your family's legal needs. I am available in my office at 509-455-8120 and on my cell phone at 509-481-3888. You can also e-mail me to schedule an initial consultation.
